“I’m Sipan, cameraman, filmmaker and photographer at Victoria Deluxe. I’ve been working here now for three years, in a lot of different positions. One of my (first and) favorite projects is The Art of Organising Hope. I met people from all around the world with whom I exchanged ideas and talked about current affairs. We were making art but it was also about creating alternative circuits in society and what the civil activists could do in this crazy world we’re living in.

Now I’m working on two projects, on the one hand the 20th anniversary of VDL. On the other hand the journey through the Pyrenees. With a group of young people we’ll be walking a route which has been used in World War Two as an escape route from occupied Europe to Spain. It’s about the journey, the experience and viewing the present as a shadow of the past. Because people are still escaping from their home countries to somewhere else. And I will be there to film everything.

As a filmmaker, I try to make the sea an aspect in every movie that I make. All of my work is connected to the water, to the people who have drowned in the sea, who suffered from the sea, who love the sea, who are afraid of the sea, who consider the sea a place of relaxation and go there just to have fun. I’m fascinated by the fact that the sea means something different for every person.

My favorite place here is my work corner. When I close the door I’m isolated from the whole world and I can really concentrate on what I’m doing. In that corner I have privacy, it’s my small space. Here at Victoria Deluxe, I love to work… as a colleague, a volunteer, a freelancer, as a visitor. It’s always nice to be here, I can’t tell you why. Many feelings, you can’t explain, you just feel them. I think it’s the energy. It’s like when you tell someone ‘I love you’ but you can’t tell them why you love them. (laughs)”

“Ik ben Sipan, cameraman, filmmaker en fotograaf bij Victoria Deluxe. Ik ben hier nu drie jaar en heb al in verschillende functies gewerkt. Een van mijn favoriete projecten was The Art of Organising Hope, waarbij ik mensen van over de hele wereld heb ontmoet. We hebben ideeën uitgewisseld over de staat van de wereld. Terwijl we kunst maakten ging het ook over alternatieve circuits creëren in onze samenleving en over burgeractivisme. Over wat de activist kan en moet doen in de dolgedraaide wereld waarin we leven.

Momenteel werk ik aan twee projecten. Langs de ene kant de twintigste verjaardag van Victoria Deluxe en aan de andere kant de tocht door de Pyreneeën, Terug Weg. Met een groep jongeren zullen we een route afstappen die tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog gebruikt werd als vluchtroute vanuit bezet Europa naar Spanje. Het project gaat over het onderweg zijn, de ervaring en het schaduwen van het heden aan het verleden, omdat mensen nu nog steeds hun thuisland ontvluchten om naar ergens anders te gaan. Ik zal deze tocht meestappen en alles in beeld brengen.

Als cineast probeer ik voor mezelf de zee een aspect te maken in elke film die ik maak. Al mijn werk is verbonden met het water. Met de mensen die verdronken zijn in de zee, die pijn geleden hebben door de zee, die houden van de zee, die bang zijn van de zee. Maar ook mensen die de zee zien als een plek van ontspanning en er heen gaan voor het plezier. Ik vind het heel interessant om te zien hoe de relatie tot de zee verschilt van persoon tot persoon.

Mijn favoriete plek hier is mijn werkhoekje. Wanneer ik de deur sluit, ben ik afgesloten van de wereld en kan ik mij echt focussen op wat ik aan het doen ben. In dat hoekje heb ik privacy, het is mijn eigen kleine ruimte. Ik ben hier graag op Victoria Deluxe, als collega, als vrijwilliger, als freelancer, als bezoeker. Het is altijd leuk om hier te zijn maar ik kan niet duidelijk zeggen waarom. Veel gevoelens kan je niet uitleggen, die voel je gewoon. Ik denk dat het de energie is die hier hangt. Het is zoals wanneer je iemand zegt dat je ze graag ziet, maar je kan niet uitleggen waarom je hen graag ziet (lacht).”
